After an explosion in a coal mine in 1893, Myron Hastings suffered a massive head injury when a spike lodged itself in the top of his skull. When they removed the spike, it was discovered that poor Myron lost most of his personality and a great deal of his memory. The monks in a local monastery nursed him back to health over several months. They placed a large candle in the hole atop his head and he spent the rest of his life as a colorful tour guide for the region as all he could ever remember was his remarkable knowledge of the old buildings. He became quite famous for entertaining tourists with candlelit tours of the ancient architecture.
